Mitigating Snakebites in Gujarat

“Battling snakebites with awareness, advocacy and training in rural parts of Gujarat”

Based on a study, the upper estimate for snakebite deaths in India is a staggering 50,000 per year. Thousands who survive suffer amputations or other severe injuries. Snakebites were being grossly under-reported in India and hence no major intervention action has been initiated for its mitigation. In turn, people kill thousands of snakes, including many threatened one. Gujarat is one of the high snakebite incidence states. Majority of these envenoming can be avoided with some basic precaution, education about proper first aid and medical treatment and proactive thinking. This project aims to reduce and save several thousand potential snakebite victims every year by identifying snakebite prone priority areas, educating the rural community and creating awareness through specially devised educational tools. A dedicated network of local community members has been built to provide support in achieving our objectives.
