Monitoring & Conservation of Forest Owlet

Monitoring & Conservation of Forest Owlet

Overview

The Forest Owlet (Athene blewitti) is an endangered species endemic to the forests of central India. Once thought to be extinct for over a century, its survival is still precarious. VNC’s dedicated project focuses on tracking and protecting this elusive bird through intensive systematic surveys, monitoring of nesting sites, and working closely with local stakeholders to preserve the integrity of its fragmented habitat.

Key Objectives

  • Conduct seasonal population surveys in the deciduous forests of Eastern Gujarat.

  • Identify and secure primary nesting trees from illegal felling and habitat degradation.

  • Collaborate with tribal communities to foster a sense of guardianship over the species.

Conservation Impact

Successfully mapped 4 previously unknown nesting territories and established a community-led monitoring network involving 500+ local residents.
