Conservation of Mugger Crocodiles

Conservation of Mugger Crocodiles

Overview

The Mugger Crocodile (Crocodylus palustris) is a keystone species of India's wetlands. In the Charotar region, crocodiles and humans share the same water bodies. VNC’s conservation project focuses on protecting these ancient reptiles through habitat restoration, monitoring nesting success, and ensuring the health of the village ponds they call home.

Key Objectives

  • Monitor crocodile populations and nesting patterns in village ponds.

  • Restore degraded wetlands to provide safe basking and nesting sites.

  • Collaborate with local panchayats to ensure water quality and habitat protection.

Conservation Impact

Maintained a stable population of Muggers in human-dominated landscapes through consistent habitat monitoring and protection.
