Arachnids – Spiders of Gujarat

Arachnids – Spiders of Gujarat

Overview

Spiders are essential ecosystem engineers, yet they are often misunderstood and feared. This project aims to document the incredible diversity of arachnids across Gujarat's varied landscapes. Through field research and photography, VNC is building a comprehensive record of species, many of which have never been documented in this region before.

Key Objectives

  • Survey diverse habitats—from salt pans to dense forests—to record spider species.

  • Publish field guides and digital resources to help citizens identify local arachnids.

  • Conduct 'Spider Walks' and workshops to dispel myths and highlight their role in pest control.

Conservation Impact

Documented over 250 species across the state, including several rare sightings that contribute to national biodiversity records.
